For some, Kowloon City represents Hong Kong’s old urban fabric – its large number of its buildings are over 50 years old; its Tong Laus (shophouses); its proximity to the famed Kowloon Walled City; its direct views of Lion Rock Mountain; its Teochew-Thai restaurants opened by; its historical (albeit now obscured) connections to the old HK airport; etc. However, like many other parts of Hong Kong, Kowloon City is facing redevelopment pressures, not just calls to increase density and heights within its own approximate 25 hectares site but to open it to adjacent neighbourhoods. In this tour, walking through from the Kowloon Walled City remains through the MTR station to the old airport side, we can get into discussions about what constitutes neighbourhood identity amongst new spatial connectivity, demographic and architectural typological changes, and of course how history is told.
